About TrueNorth

Key Energy Services

Key Energy Services is one of the largest onshore energy production service companies in the United States. The company provides well maintenance, workover and recompletion services as well as contract drilling, fluid and logistics services and pressure pumping from 137 operating locations in 13 states. Ken Houston is Vice President, Health, Safety, Security and Environmental for Key Energy and is responsible for overseeing the company’s compliance with federal and state regulations. He also directs the company’s safety training and incident management efforts. His 100 full–time safety and environmental personnel are responsible for tracking training, inspections and investigation data for roughly 9000 operational employees.

The Challenge

clients-key2Historically, Key Energy grew through acquisition, so the company’s operations functioned as 13 separate legal entities with 13 different DOT
numbers. Files and documents for roughly 250 drivers per operating entity were managed and audited on a local level. When the company made the decision to consolidate its operations into a single entity with 2000 DOT drivers and 2800 units, it was faced with the challenge of finding a centralized way to track and confirm compliance. Houston seized the opportunity by seeking a solution that would allow Key Energy to store data electronically for efficient third–party auditing and regulatory reviews.

The Solution

Key Energy evaluated several providers but selected TrueNorth because of its system functionality and in–depth auditing. “Competitors’ systems were somewhat similar,” Houston recalls, “but the value provided was not equal. TrueNorth offered us a much better level of oversight and control.” Key Energy uses TrueNorth to track driver qualifications along with employee training. The Company also uses TrueNorth’s medical tracking services for pulmonary fitness assessments and auditory monitoring. Key Energy was able to maintain its existing processes, forms and documents, but it now scans those items for electronic data entry and paperless storage at the corporate office.

The Results

Today, Houston credits TrueNorth for a smooth service transition and improved data quality. “We elected to convert to TrueNorth in stages rather than drop all of our operations into the system at once,” Houston explains, “and they worked with us to pilot the switchover and address issues before we converted all of our divisions. The biggest benefits we’ve seen are that the quality of information we have in our files, the condition of the documents themselves and our compliance with regulations is better today because of TrueNorth. As a result, my safety professionals are free to be out in the field helping to reduce injuries rather than focusing on paperwork.”
