Lafarge North America accounts for one–quarter of the company’s business and has over 1300 operating locations in the United States and Canada. Jon Swierenga is the company’s Director of Safety and Health, Eastern United States. As such, he is responsible for identifying and securing the tools and techniques to help his region comply with safety and health regulations. Safety personnel who report to him are responsible for managing MVR reviews, providing safety training and tracking compliance data on 1000 CDL carriers in the company.

The Challenge

Lafarge’s Eastern US Region used a document imaging system to collect driver applications and background check results along with employee physical exams, MVRs and Annual Certification of Violations documents. The system stored raw information but was unable to index, purge, evaluate or manage data. It also relied heavily on administration by the human resources department. When organizational changes left the HR function with fewer staff, Lafarge sought other alternatives to streamline data collection and improve the quality, accuracy and accessibility of information.

The Solution

Lafarge reviewed available firms and chose TrueNorth to track driver training and other driver qualification compliance information. “We selected TrueNorth because of the company’s expertise and their ability to customize a system that met our requirements for a market area–based program,” Swierenga remembers. “TrueNorth is set up to operate very efficiently at a decentralized level.”

The Results

Today, Lafarge personnel email compliance proofs to TrueNorth where they are analyzed, verified, and tracked.  Lafarge receives weekly updates of overall regional compliance as well as statistics according to market area. “I can look immediately at percent compliance by area and then drill down to the location or the individual to see any exceptions that might be affecting our compliance right that minute,” notes Swierenga. “Because of TrueNorth’s sophisticated algorithms, I can forecast reports out 30, 60 or 90 days ahead to anticipate requirements.”

“I can honestly say that our compliance program improves every day,” Swierenga says. “We have a much stronger, more credible system than we did three years ago because of TrueNorth.”
