Selin Hoboy, the company’s Corporate Vice President for Environment, Safety and Health, is responsible for keeping the company’s operations in compliance with diverse regulatory requirements. Environmental, safety and health personnel who report to her are responsible for compliance at the site level.

The Challenge

The company tracks a vast amount of compliance data on over 3,700 employees spread throughout operations in 48 states, Puerto Rico and Canada. With that dispersion of data, Stericycle lacked a consistent structure for tracking and maintaining compliance with OSHA, DOT and EPA requirements. “For a company like ours that is ever expanding and has rapid growth,” Hoboy observes, “identifying a single system to gather and report compliance data is critical.”

The Solution

Stericycle hired TrueNorth to manage its employees’ training and DOT driver qualification compliance requirements as well as to provide medical surveillance oversight of its third party clinics. TrueNorth receives faxed or emailed information on compliance events from individual Stericycle operations and their clinics, verifies it and enters the data into its database. Hoboy receives automated weekly status reports containing global data while her staff accesses on-demand reports to identify missing or late items and to generate planning documents.

The Results

Compliance reports from TrueNorth have allowed Stericycle to quantify the results of its compliance efforts and to manage them proactively. “This system gives us a level of confidence that our numbers are correct and that compliance is being maintained in the field,” says Hoboy. “Because of that, we not only hold ESH personnel accountable for compliance, we now hold district level managers and employees accountable as well.”

“One of TrueNorth’s greatest strengths is customer service,” remarks Hoboy. “When we had a DOT audit a few years ago, TrueNorth helped us throughout the entire process. They were phenomenal. The other strength of TrueNorth is how intelligently they think about compliance processes. We have over 78,000 rules that we apply to employees alone. There is no way we could track them without TrueNorth.”
